Fifteen years ago, I wrote my first book.
I had no formal training, no English degree—not even a university education in so much as anything. I was just a girl who liked to write and stuff. My day job? An optical dispenser—then and now.
One day at work, I met David Bryan Russell, a storyboard artist with an incredible résumé. He’d worked on films like Wolverine, The Chronicles of Narnia, Moulin Rouge, Tombstone, Pirates of the Caribbean, and more. When I casually mentioned my love for writing, he asked me to send him something.
So, I did.
It was a full-length fantasy romance called The Mortal King. David was so impressed that he spent the next year mentoring me—teaching me everything from structuring chapters to full novel edits and formatting. With his guidance, I polished the book and submitted it to Penguin Publishing. It made it through the door, was read… and declined. Fantasy romance wasn’t a genre they were accepting at the time.
My first rejection. And it hurt.
I shelved the book, tucking it away in a forgotten file on my computer, and turned to writing contemporary and comedy romance—what readers wanted back then.
But times have changed.
Fantasy romance is now one of the hottest genres on the market.
After fifteen years, multiple rewrites, and a title change, this book is finally getting its moment to shine.
